Such tubes are not designed for small signal. Better is to use higher gain tubes for small signal, and medium gain tubes as a driver. As a rule of thumb, a tube like 300B requires 60 Volt AC signal on the grid. The gain of the 12B is a factor 12 to 14.5 depending on the load. If choke loaded, the gain will be 14.5. If speaker loaded, the gain will be around 12 to 13.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAs a driver tube for 300B, the 12B would typically be operated choke loaded, or transformer loaded, and requires appr 4V AC signal on the grid. This can be achieved conveniently with a step up input transformer with a factor 1 : 3, resulting in an input sensitivity of 1.3 Volt. In this way, there is no more need for a pre amplifier tube, which would be only a source for hum and noise, because signal would be very low. Whereas an input transformer can supply a gain of factor 2...4 cost effective, and virtualy no noise or microphonics, and even prevents cable hum to enter the amplifier via the input.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn case even higher input sensitivity is needed, the 12B can also drive an inter stage transformer with a step up factor of 1:2 with ease.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe lower output resistance makes this tube uncritical in the choice of output transformers, yet keeping the gain around 12....14 depending on the application. This higher gain will develop the typical sound, of tubes like PX25 or RE604, which have a silky and non dominant sound.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA very nice application is also in a head phone amplifier, because relatively low output signal is needed, yet at lowest possible hum, noise and microphonics. Here, the use principle is another. Such amplifiers should be designed for having more amplification as strictly needed, and then the signal level is attenuated on purpose at the output. This attenuation will also attenuate any noise from the tube, making the amplifier very low noise. Radios internally useually operated at 250V DC. This voltage was easy to achieve, and enough for amplifier tubes. However for a triode as output tube, 250V was a compromise in terms of output power. Otherwise the whole radio had to be designed for higher voltage, which was more expensive. Yet for higher output, a higher working voltage of 275V was used, as found in more expensive radios and audio amplifiers. The 80 tube was designed for both applications, and still today an ideal choice for small HiFi amplifiers, or pre amplifiers. It can be regarded as a smaller version of the 5U4G, but the 80 has higher plate impedance, which is of advantage for low hum circuit design.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe maximum capacitor value for the 80 tube was limited at 20uF. The 80 rectifier is quite robust, because the relation of maximum capacitor value compared to the heater current is very good. Designed in England in 1932, it was the first tube, designed for larger output power. In the old Marconi Numbering System, P stands for 4V heater, and X stands for Power Tube. In Japan, 4Volt heater tubes have always been more preferred for their sound. Moreover, PX25 is a tube with higher gain, it is around 9x unloaded, which is more than twice as much as 300B. This makes driver circuit easier, and PX25 needs less than 30V RMS signal on the grid, for full output signal. The higher gain of PX25 was achieved by Marconi, by increasing the plate distance. We did the same.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003eSound of the PX25\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe need to understand the design principle of the PX25 tube. This is a tube with much larger plate distance as usual. We just adopted this from the vintage designs. The larger distance will catch your eye immediately, when looking inside the bulb. Not only will this make the glow picture nicer. Also the higher anode distance results in higher gain, and higher plate impedance. Which is what PX25 sound is about. Generally speaking such tubes have a more silkier sound, and a tendency to develop best efficiency at somewhat higher plate voltage. As with all higher gain tubes, there is a higher influence of the tube itself, to the final sound. For the same reason, a good quality transformer is needed, and a good quality PX25 tube is needed, with original specifications. Achieving lowest distortion is possible with historical tubes, or new build tubes, by choosing the load impedance slightly above the original recommendations of OSRAM. The Output Power can well achieve 4 Watt at full signal, when going to a Load impedance of 3...4k. Already at marginally lower signal, distortion begins to drop fast.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere is some resemblance with the 2A3 or AD1 tube, which can also operate nicely at 250V 60mA, same as the PX4. Yet PX4 is a tube with somewhat higher impedance character, positioned somewhere in between 45 and 2A3. The sound of the PX4 comes closer to a 45, but the output power comes closer to tubes like 2A3 or AD1. This makes it a very good tube for high efficiency loudspeakers, similar to what OSRAM wrote already, a long time ago.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFilament \/ Heater:\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe EML PX4 uses a heater current of 1.5 Ampere, vs. only 1 Ampere for the historical tubes. The EML heaters are specially constructed to have lowest possible hum, which is lower than historical tubes. Altough the is specified for AC or DC heating, for best results we recommend DC heating. This becomes increasingly important if a tube is used for very high efficiency loudspeakers. If you are looking for real triode sound, the 45 tube is very interesting. It is important that tubes and speakers fit together well. So low power tubes sound best at high efficiency speakers, and vice versa. Best sound of the 45 is developed at the very sweet first Watt. The 45 will reward you with best sound when you are using high efficiency speaker systems, starting at 96..99dB. At the same time, here comes a drawback for the amplifier and the tubes as well. Such speaker systems of 100dB and above will make smallest imperfections audible, and the amplifier must produce as little hum and noise as can be. This is difficult. When you are thinking of 108db horn systems this stresses the design limits of tubes and amplifiers a lot. A quick way to test the noise level of your amplifier-tube combination is, to measure the AC signal out of the amplifier with the inputs muted, but the speaker connected.
