Marcel Dupré was not only one of the most important composers of organ music, but also a great interpreter. The numbers speak for themselves: the French master organist played 2178 recitals worldwide, including several concert series with all the organ works by Johann Sebastian Bach - by heart.
In addition to his international concert activities, Dupré was organist at the great Cavaillé-Coll organ of Saint-Sulpice de Paris for over 40 years. Oliver Messiaen on Dupré: "His music reflects his extraordinary virtuosity."
Now Mercury Living Presence is releasing a remastered version of Camille Saint-Saëns' Symphony No. 3 op. 78 ('Organ Symphony') on CD. The recording of Marcel Dupré and the Detroit Symphony Orchestra under Paul Paray took place in 1957 in the Ford Auditorium, Detroit.
