The Elgar Legend on Vinyl: Jacqueline du Pré's Recording of the Cello Concerto
Some classical works are inextricably linked to the interpretation of a single artist: such is the case with Elgar's Cello Concerto with Jaqueline du Pré, whose far too early death once shocked the music world. From her nevertheless quite extensive discography, the Elgar concerto stands out like a monument. The album on which the work once appeared in combination with Elgar's song cycle Sea Pictures is considered legendary.

Celebrated as the world's greatest cellist, du Pré fell ill with multiple sclerosis and had to end her career in 1973 at the age of only 28. in 1987, the student of Paul Tortelier, Pablo Casals and Mstislav Rostropovich died at only 42. That she discovered Edward Elgar's cello concerto alongside those of Haydn, Dvorak, Schumann and Saint-Saens was to her great credit. The extremely dramatic work then also experienced its reference recording with her as soloist and Sir John Barbirolli on the podium. Jacqueline du Pré, then 20 years old, flanked the English mezzo-soprano Janet Baker with a recording of Elgar's Sea Pictures - a cycle of five orchestral songs - that is also legendary today.

Jacqueline du Pré's name, by the way, is also known outside of music to this day: A rose and a clematis were named after the artist.
