Jazz At The Pawnshop, recorded at the Stampen Jazz Club in Stockholm on December 14 and 15, 1976, has been called "the best jazz recording of the century"! The musical artistry and sonic excellence of the recording is second to none.
The producer of the album, Jacob Boethius, writes in the liner notes: "When sound engineer Gert Palmcrantz loaded his car with equipment outside the Europa Film Studios in Stockholm, Sweden, on December 6, 1976, this was just one of many recordings. Nobody could have guessed at the time that this would become a cult recording among audiophiles and one of the most famous and respected jazz recordings of all time. The very fact that a single jazz recording was released in so many formats over a very long period of time (30 years) shows us that this recording must be truly unique.
'The two nights of recording at the Pawnshop Jazz Club were truly exceptional. The audience pushed the musicians to their limits, and I sat in the small kitchen of the bar with two Nagra recorders and sound engineer Gert Palmcrantz, listening to the result of a unique miking, surrounded by five musicians playing in a kind of trance. The total number of copies of the recording sold is now over 500,000, a tremendously good sales figure for classical jazz. And the records are still selling in the region of 3,000 to 4,000 copies a year today, more than 40 years after their release
