At The Montreux Festival (remastered) (180g)

Label: MPS, 1976

The live recording of the festival on Lake Geneva is considered one of the piano trio classics of the seventies par excellence and also one of the milestones in the Jamaican pianist's catalogue. This recording from 1976 captures nothing more and nothing less than the moment in Alexander's young career that finally brought him on a par with giants like Oscar Peterson

His playing combines the skills of his Canadian colleague with Caribbean feeling and a dash of gospel. The then relatively unknown accompanists, bassist John Clayton and drummer Jeff Hamilton, form a rhythm section with a high degree of independence and pointed solo spots. Many moments of the show inevitably cast a spell on the listener: be it the introduction with the inspired blues variations in an Ahmad Jamal composition, or the soulful contemplation of "Feelings". Exuberantly the swing in Ellington's "Satin Doll", with great earth heaviness played the gospel of "Drown In My Own Tears". Almost archaic is the Afro-atmosphere of the "Work Song", in which Clayton's virtuosity shows itself at its highest levels. The "Battle Hymn Of The Republic" is a classic in its own right with its mischievous and at the same time affable dramaturgy. Even after four and a half decades, the magic of that night in Montreux is still within reach.

Reviews
"Jamaican pianist Monty Alexander had a great moment here with his fellow riders John Clayton (b) and Jeff Hamilton (dr).
