Oscar Peterson: Affinity (180g) (Limited Edition) LP
Label: Elemental, 1962
Serie: Jean-Pierre Leloir Collection
+ Ray Brown,Ed Thigpen
The Oscar Peterson Trio, with pianist Ray Brown on bass and Ed Thigpen on drums, is considered one of the finest trio formations in jazz history. "Affinity," recorded in 1962, features the trio playing a glorious selection of familiar standards, including Peterson's first recording of Bill Evans' "Waltz for Debby." "I find a kind of brightness and grittiness in the group's work that comes almost entirely from the leader's piano," wrote Pete Welding in his Down Beat review of the LP.
"All of the tracks, regardless of the mood of the individual tunes, come out with the same bouncy, exuberant quality. Scott Yanow rated the album four-and-a-half stars in All Music Guide, noting, "Although the pianist is virtually always the main voice, Brown and Thigpen both make strong (if subtle) contributions to the music. Highlights include "Waltz for Debby," Brown's "Gravy Waltz," and "Yours Is My Heart Alone."
