Serge Prokofieff (1891-1953)
Symphonie Nr.5 (180g)
New York Philharmonic Orchestra, Leonard Bernstein

Label: Columbia, 1966

Serie: Speakers Corner Records

Prokofiev's Fifth Symphony is one of the few pieces of Russian tradition that, in the field of tension between socialist art realism and moderate modernism, has become a celebrated piece of repertoire. Although the composer, who was true to his own style and, in contrast to his colleague Shostakovich, privileged, was not entirely taken in by his late commitment to politically free art, his music touches concert goers all over the world.

In this recording, cosmopolitan Bernstein and the New Yorkers bring the whole beauty of the melodies, which spread out in the first movement to full orchestral radiance. The clarinet theme of the burlesque second movement in its imaginative variations provides cheerfulness as a song "to the free and happy man". Echoes of the throbbing Symphonique Classique seem quite deliberate.

Prokofiev shows himself to be a sovereign symphonist in the classical-romantic canon of forms in the finale, which generates far more than just melodious apotheosis from the theme of the first movement and fresh motifs. For the sharp-edged, percussively intoxicating final bars round off the tonal spectrum of the orchestral study, which demands everything from each individual musician.
Reviews
"One of the most aptly named recordings of Prokofiev's Fifth Symphony." (LP magazine, 1 / 2017)
