Antonin Dvorak: Symphonie Nr.9 (180g) LP
Wiener Philharmoniker, Istvan Kertesz
Label: Decca, 1961
Serie: Speakers Corner Records
Dvorák's last symphony, premiered in New York in 1893, fulfills the composer's many years of experience with classical forms. This work owes its unbroken popularity to its finely structured orchestration and thematic inventions, which were borrowed throughout from various American folk songs, including Negro spirituals.
Transforming Dvorák's score into sound has always been a challenge for the orchestra and the recording team. In this recording with the Vienna Philharmonic under the baton of István Kertész, it has been possible in an exemplary manner to capture the elemental force of heavy brass as well as the luxuriant string section and lyrical solo parts on recordings. The highest musicality of the performers, combined with sound technical perfection, lend this recording from the early days of stereophony the status of a historical sound document that has no competition to fear in the abundance of recordings of this symphony.
