On the occasion of Zubin Mehta's 80th birthday, Decca (Universal Music), in collaboration with the Vienna Philharmonic and Pro-Ject Audio Systems, presented this classic album with cult status in 2016. A must-have for music fans of the analogue era, it is now being released again on heavy vinyl. In the original design of the first edition, this recording was mastered directly from Decca analogue tapes at Abbey Road Studios.

The present recording is probably the best Mahler interpretation of Mehta. When the choir begins, pay special attention to the bass parts. Spectacular! Mezzo-soprano Christa Ludwig and soprano Ileana Cotrubas sing crystal clear and beguiling. The finale under Mehta makes this recording one of the most moving pieces of music within the Decca catalogue.

This recording has everything you could wish for. Mehta's perfect tempi, the great voices of the soloists and the Vienna State Opera Chorus, and the virtuoso playing of the Vienna Philharmonic!
