Gustav Mahler (1860-1911)
Maureen Forrester, Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, Zubin Mehta
Label: Acoustic Sounds, 1978
This double album by Decca is an experience of overwhelming sonority. Mahler's Symphony No. 3, played by the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Zubin Mehta, with contralto Maureen Forrester.
This recording is considered one of Decca's best; it was recorded in March 1978 at Royce Hall in the USA by sound engineers James Lock and Simon Eadon. From the original tapes remastered by the famous chief sound engineer Willem Makkee on a Neumann VMS 80 cutting machine.
