"Of course, everyone who is halfway interested in classical music knows today that Martha Argerich plays in the world league with her mixture of technique, sense of sound and poetry. But to have this brought before one's ears so amazingly, so dewily on the long-playing record, makes the joy about the disappeared and now finally reappeared Martha then once again quite a bit greater." The perfect Chopin moment:
Martha Argerich's legendary 1965 album on vinyl
"I took a furtive look into the studio to be sure that this flood of sound was really coming from the petite girl sitting there at the piano. It was incredible. ... She came into the control room, looked at me and beamed, because she knew what an overwhelming impression she had made." What happened in June 1965, and what producer Suvi Raj Grubb described here, was to make recording history: The young Martha Argerich, winner of the 1965 Warsaw Chopin Competition, recorded her first recital as an EMI exclusive artist. It was to become one of the most famous classical albums. Now, on the occasion of the pianist's 75th birthday, it is released in a noble vinyl version.
On the program was, of course - Chopin. With this master of romantic piano music, the then 24-year-old Argentine pianist had already enchanted the jurors in Warsaw. The recital now sparkles with virtuosity and a wealth of facets: in addition to mazurkas, a nocturne, a scherzo and the A-flat major Polonaise, the third piano sonata stands like a rock in the program and shows why Martha Argerich's playing was celebrated worldwide as a "natural event" full of "elemental power," and why the actually rather shy pianist was even apostrophized as a "lioness at the piano. The legend of the album also includes the fact that contractual clauses initially prevented the release of this elemental force of piano art. Only since 1999 has it been possible to comprehend the enthusiasm that left producers and insiders speechless during the three-day studio recording.

Reviews
"Chopin seems to have been composed into her fingers. Martha Argerich proves a fabulous accuracy, especially in the final movement in B minor especially in the fulminant final movement of the B minor Sonata. The rambling sensitive lyricism in the Nocturne op. 15 is presented with great sensitivity There is a touch artist at work, who fires up the A-flat major Polonaise with sharply tightened tempi and irresistible virtuoso gestures."
