THE ESSENTIAL TOOL FOR YOUR MC

There are several ways to preamplify a low output Moving Coil cartridge, often through electronic circuits that are compliant but not with the precision and isolation required for this type of cartridge. The proper and professional way to do this is with a step-up transformer, but it is not that simple.

Moving Coil – Low output

Moving Coil cartridge technology achieves a pick-up of the vinyl groove in its own unique way that many music enthusiasts love, but technically it generates a very low level signal with very low impedance. This carries with it a great responsibility when it comes to normalising that signal so that it is audible correctly.

Pero, para la creación de estos “micrófonos” no hay un estándar definido en sus especificaciones técnicas, además de que por su naturaleza, nos encontramos ante una gran sensibilidad y delicadeza frente interferencias y ruidos externos.

Lundahl Transformers

Right now, in production, the best transformers on the market for signal matching are produced in Sweden by Lundahl. For this function, we have selected the versions that combine a unique uncut amorphous cobalt core and a double coil structure with high purity copper wire Cardas in an oversized design.

The goal is to provide the best possible MC transformer, regardless of cost. The double-winding structure greatly improves immunity to external magnetic fields from power supplies, motors, etc. In addition, the transformers are mu-metal caged.

The really important materials

Because the MC cartridge is at the beginning of a large, very delicate and high-gain preamp chain, special care must be taken in its connectivity. Any element that switches the signal or interferes with it will be converted into noise that will be greatly amplified and create misconnection resulting in poor dynamics and bad frequency response.

On our side, we offer a solid Step-Up Transformer, employing high-level RCA connectors, broadcast/professional quality shielded signal cabling and a fixed, correctly soldered recommended load impedance.

STEP-UP are passive elements that act as converters, but they must be matched to their input and output elements to perform the desired function. In this case they are designed to be connected to the input of a Phono MM preamplifier with an impedance of 47K . This preamplifier will take care of the RIAA curve and the final amplification.

MC-LO Cartridge -> Step-Up Transformer -> MM Phono

But now comes the compatibility problem. There are a large number of MC cartridges with different specifications which require a precise conversion in each case. However, there is no transformer that covers the wide range of differences between them.

In order to offer the best possible quality and compatibility, we have chosen to offer 5 different gain and impedance configurations to cover all the models on the market today. Below is a table to help you visualise that the different gain options we offer go hand in hand with a good range of compatible cartridges. Normally Japanese manufacturers are similar in technical specifications, but others such as Ortofon are a little different from the norm.

This table can be used as a guideline for the selection of the MC cartridge and its transformer and the possible change to another MC cartridge in the future.

To understand the data in the table, we must look primarily at the suggested output level and input impedance. The goal is to achieve an output level of around 5.0mV, but this range is acceptable from 3.0mV to 6.0mV. The key is to multiply the output level by the transformer ratio to find out what the resulting level response will be. Let's look at an example with the classic Audio Technica AT33Sa.

SETUP B: Output level = 0.4mV multiply by ratio 12, result = 4.8mV

We are at the right value, but we are going to force another situation to explain that the range can be opened up further for future compatibility.

SETUP A: Output level = 0.4mV multiply by ratio 8, result = 3.2mV

It is a low level, but acceptable and used by many MM cartridges historically, it is only necessary to give a little more volume to the amplifier.

The suggested load impedance is the impedance that the cartridge has to see when connected to the preamplifier, to comply with this specification we must make an adjustment to the output of the transformer so that when connected to the 47K of the Phono MM input the result is adequate for the frequency response. But this is taken care of by us, and the 60SUT will have a fixed component inside to meet the impedance required in each SETUP.
